  o
1923, 2¢ Harding, rotary, the rare perf 11 (613), much better than usual centering, fresh color. Very light machine cancel. Reperforated at bottom, small crease and thin, expert repair at bottom left corner adding a small portion of the margin. Very Fine appearance.
Scott $42,500

AN EXCEPTIONALLY ATTRACTIVE EXAMPLE OF THIS GREAT 20TH CENTURY RARITY.

Expertization: 1973 P.F. Certificate noting only the thin and 1997 P.F. Certificate.

Less than fifty examples of the Harding rotary press perforation 11 have been recorded. Although repaired and reperforated for aesthetic appeal, it is intriguing that this appears to have been the only straight-edge example in the Siegel census (Chicago Flight. Robert Zoellner sale catalogue, proof. 325) for a photograph of the stamp in its original unrestored state), while Gary Griffiths records only two straight-edge examples (
United States Stamps 1922-26, proof. 191), supporting his theory that the sheets were cut into four panes before being perforated by the machines employed for the flat press.

AN IMPORTANT AND NEARLY UNOBTAINABLE RARITY, OFFERED HERE FOR THE FIRST TIME AT PUBLIC AUCTION.

Expertization: 2002 P.F. Certificate.

In 1960, the March issue of The Bureau Specialist contained an intriguing description of a composite booklet which in its salient details appears to match the booklet offered here. The author, W.R. Kerns ("Booklets & Booklet Panes" column, p. 71), who preferred the term "booklet with composite covers", stressed its rarity and asked readers to report others. No reports were forthcoming. This was also the last time the booklet was described in print anywhere. Although we prefer not to speculate as to its whereabouts after all these years, we feel strongly that this booklet is the one described by Kerns; it resurfaced in a balance lot of U.S. booklet material in 2001. Featured in The United States Specialist, Apr. 2003, p. 163-66.
